Comprehensive Eye Examinations

Comprehensive eye examinations are important for all people, of all ages, every one to two years. It is often thought that if a person is seeing well, their eyes must be healthy, but unfortunately that is not necessarily the case. There are many sight-threatening eye diseases that can develop without any early symptoms or warning signs, the best way to protect your vision is through a complete examination.

At your comprehensive eye examination at Nepean Optometric, the Doctors of Optometry will assess your vision as well as do a complete evaluation of the health of your eyes, in order to detect any eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, at the earliest stage possible. Early intervention and treatment is often the key to ensuring long term ocular health and minimizing damage. In addition, our optometrists will look for any signs of problems with your overall health, as diseases such as diabetes and hypertension will often present as changes in the blood vessels of the eyes.

Your comprehensive eye examination will include many components, including:

• A discussion about your ocular health and any concerns you may have about your eyes or vision.
• A review of your general health, including systemic diseases and medications.
• A measurement of your Visual Acuity (how well you can see at far and near).
• An assessment of your Binocular Vision (how well your eyes work together).
• A Refraction, which includes a measurement of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
• An examination of ocular health of the anterior and posterior segment (inside and outside) of the eye, and will likely include pupil dilation. For further information on pupil dilation, click here.
• A measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP), which can correlate with an increased risk of glaucoma.
• A digital retinal image.

The Ontario government (OHIP) pays for most of your eye exam when you are nineteen years of age or younger and sixty-five years of age or older. Certain procedures are not covered by OHIP. Third party providers will often pay for your eye exam if you are between these ages.

Motor Vehicle and Occupational Eye Examinations

Motor vehicle driver license examinations, regardless of class of license, can be provided at our clinic. When a workplace situation has specific requirements for visual needs and eye safety, our optometrists are able to do an appropriate occupational eye examination addressing those needs. Written reports can be supplied when required for a modest fee. Safety eyewear provided by our office conforms to all CSA standards.
